When I first started playing Amnesia: Memories, Kent was the boy I was least interested in. At a glance, Shin is most my type in terms of anime boys, and I like Toma’s style overall as well. Kent didn’t particularly stand out to me, and I wasn’t that excited to play his route…
…but now after finishing Kent’s route, I think he may be my favorite boy so far.
Amnesia: Memories is an otome visual novel game first released by Idea Factory back in 2013 for the PlayStation Vita, now made available for PC. I am playing the English-translated PC version of the game. Amnesia is one of the most successful otome visual novel franchises in Japan. When I visited Japan back in 2015, you could visit any Animate store and see the characters everywhere. I had to find out why the game’s so popular, which is why I’ve been going through each of the characters routes.
And thus, I continue the game onto Kent’s route, and fall in love with a stubborn but easily flustered guy.
The Stubborn Professor
At the beginning of the route, I wasn’t sure whether to trust Kent or not. The game centers around a heroine that has Amnesia, so it can be difficult to tell who’s on our side without our memories. However, as the route went on it became clear to me that Kent is an earnest guy. It seems he and the heroine had a bit of a rocky relationship before, but the reason for this will be revealed at the end of the route.
Much of the route consists of taking walks with him where he’s going too fast, and rigid conversations about love that seem overly logical. His personality at the beginning of the route is tough, but as it goes on he grows a little bit softer and more thoughtful each day. It’s heartwarming to see his change in attitude towards the heroine as he becomes more fond of her, plus you get some chances to pick on him a bit. It’s always so fun to see how flustered he will suddenly become~
But as I went along in his route, I faced a serious dilemma that put our relationship in jeopardy. This dilemma is…
We Have to Do MATH In This Game?!
As you get to know Kent you learn that he’s a university student and that you first met him at a lecture he teaches at your college. He’s very serious about his studies, and he will not tolerate dating someone who does not match up to his smarts or at least try their best at their studies. Thus, comes the math quiz.
As a gift, Kent gives the heroine a math workbook specifically designed by himself. This is meant to help her in her studies, which is a pretty generous thing to do. However, this workbook ends up becoming an important part of his route because we, the player, actually have to answer 10 math questions using the choices offered in the visual novel. More than that, Kent’s affection towards you rides on the line depending on your answers.
When I first saw the math questions pop up on the screen, I panicked. It’s been several years since I’ve graduated college now, and I studied as an art major. My math skills are ridiculously rusty, and questions that may have been easy for me to answer in high school were now hurting my brain. I suppose I could’ve just used a walk through for this part to get the right answers, but no: I must get the full experience, have full immersion in the game. I am going to answer these math problems!!
…at least, I did the best I could until I got the answer wrong, then went back to my last save state so I could get the right answer. I did the best I could, at least. Just remember that Kent wants to date someone smart, someone on his level, and will not settle for less.
NOTE: Beyond this point there will be spoilers for later events in Kent’s route and two of the endings!
Summer Festivals and a Lonely Farewell
My favorite part of the route is the day of the festival. At first, Kent forgets about this date since it was made awhile ago and he doesn’t care to go. However, as you are waiting for him in the train station, all dressed up in a summer kimono, he rushes over as soon as he realizes how much you were looking forward to the date. It seems that this event could be skipped with the wrong option, so I’m glad I was able to see this event in my first run through. Plus, it provided some very entertaining opportunities to pick on Kent.
I might’ve picked on him in his route a little too much, because I was not able to get the trust meter high enough on my first run through and ended up getting a bad end where he leaves for England for a study abroad program. It’s almost impossible to get the Good Ends in Amnesia without using a walk through since there are so many choices. I wasn’t going to accept this fate with Kent, so I restarted the game in order to see his true ending.
Part of a bad memory is revealed a little bit during the bad ending I got, but the full truth is only revealed in the good ending. In the good end, he decides not to study abroad and stays with our heroine until a year later where we are able to go to England together. They really are meant to be together 🙂
Kent’s route is my favorite in Amnesia:Memories so far. While I had a fun time with the danger of Ikki’s route and Shin’s hilariously awful tsundere attitude, I can’t help but be pulled towards Kent’s stubborn but still sensitive personality. Maybe I’m in love with him as well. I’m excited to play more and see how Toma’s route goes and what’s up with Ukyo as well.
